I was fortunate to have the chance to meet one of the most wonderfully inspirational women recently.
Photographer Tsuneko Sasamoto was Japan's first woman photojournalist, and at the incredible age of 96, is still going strong.
Her career spans over 70 years, beginning in an era when women didn't have careers, and certainly didn't become photographers. Starting out in 1940, her tenacity and energy saw her capture some of the most iconic images throughout the following decades, with subjects as diverse as actors, politicians and even the imperial family.
An exhibition of her images of post-war Japan are currently on display at Cosmos Gallery in Kamimeguro, and if you're lucky, Sasamoto-san herself will be there to talk about her experiences and sign her book. We asked her sign a book for our one-month old daughter, and I hope Sasamoto-san inspires her to also be a pioneer when she grows up!

先日、とても素敵な女性と会う機会がありました。

写真家の笹本恒子さんは女性報道写真家第一号で、96歳の今でもとても元気に仕事をされています。女性が外で働くという事の無かった時代から始まり、彼女のキャリアは70年を超えています。特に、その頃は女性写真家など全くいませんでした。

1940年に写真を撮るようになって、粘り強く持ち前の忍耐力で色々な俳優や女優、政治家、また皇族のアイコニックなポートレイトやドキュメンタリー写真を撮りました。

今、上目黒で日本の戦争後の展覧会を行っていますので、是非ご覧ください。

タイミングが良ければ、笹本さんご本人がいらっしゃいますので、色々な経験を伺ったり、カタログにサインしてもらうことができるかも...？

私たちは生後１ヶ月の娘宛にサインして頂きました。
娘も笹本さんみたいな生き方に影響を受けて育っていってくれる事を望みます。

笹本さんは今月、新しいプロジェクトの撮影するため、初ニューヨーク行かれるそうです。
