When in New York recently, I decided to try out a new hotel, The Jane .
The building itself has a long and very colourful history, so it felt like an adventurous alternative to the usual mainstream chain hotel.
この前ニューヨークに行ったとき、新しいホテル「The Jane」にトライしてみようと思いました。とても歴史が長〜いホテルで、一般的なホテルチェーンと比べると、ちょっとわくわくするステイ！

It was built in 1908 as the American Seaman's Friend Society Sailor's Home and Institute, and its cabin-like rooms housed sailors on on-shore leave. In 1912 the survivors of the Titanic were housed there until the end of the inquiry into the ship's sinking and a memorial service was held there for those lost in the tragedy.
1908年にAmerican Seaman's Friend Society Sailor's Home and Instituteとして建てられたこのホテル。キャビン風の小さな部屋はお休み中の船員たちのためのものでした。1912年のタイタニック号沈没事故の際、その生存者が宿泊し、追悼会が開催されたのもここThe Janeでした。

The hotel was taken over by the YMCA in 1944, eventually becoming a centre for bohemians and artists in the 80's and 90's.
It has since been revived by famous hotelier Sean MacPherson (The Maritime Hotel, The Bowery Hotel, Waverly Inn) to become one of the most talked-about hotels in the city.
1944年にはYMCAのホステルになり、1980's & 90'sにアーティストやボヘミアンのたまり場に。最近、有名なホテルオーナーSean MacPherson (The Maritime Hotel, The Bowery Hotel, Waverly Inn)によってリニューアルされ、ニューヨークで話題のホテルのひとつになりました。

Most of the rooms are very stylish (think the Darjeeling Limited) but remain cabin-sized, which is great if you're in New York on your own and need a centrally located, cheap and cool place to stay. The only drawback is that the bathrooms are shared...sometimes with the colourful permanant residents, of whom some remain in all their glory!
ゲストルームはとてもスタイリッシュだけど、とても狭い！サイズもインテリアも寝台車みたいで、Wes Anderson監督の映画「Darjeeling Limited」のような感じ。本当に楽しい！ニューヨークで一人旅するには、安さ、おしゃれさ、立地のよさではとびきりのクールなホテルです。
ちょっとがっかりなところは、バスルームが共同でちょっと不便だし、昔から住んでいる超個性的な人たち（パーマネントレシデント）がまだいるということ。

We were lucky enough to be one of the first to stay in the newly opened, much more comfortable Captain's Cabins - they are quite spacious, quirkily stylish and most importantly, have their own bathrooms!
ラッキーなことに、新しくお披露目された船長室に泊まることができました。まあまあ広くて、スタイリッシュな上にバスルーム付き！やった！

The place is still very much under construction, and the bar (one of the hottest places to go in NY with regular celebrity clientele such as Misha Barton) has had a rocky start (last I heard it had been shut down...again), but Cafe Gitane has just opened downstairs and it really is an amazing place to stay for those who love an adventure.
ホテルの一部はまだ工事中だし、ミーシャ・バートンなどのセレブがいっぱい集まるバーも時々クローズ......。でも、1階にはCafe Gitaneもオープンしたから、きっと、新しいものや珍しいものが好きな人にとっては本当に面白くて、楽しいアドベチャー体験になるはず！
