One of my favourite things about traveling is finding a cafe to hang out and call your 'local', if only for a few days.

旅行するときに大好きなのは現地の『ローカルカフェ」を見つけること。

Toronto has great cafes, but our favourite is Te Aro. Owned by New Zealanders, I guess it reminds me a little of home.

トロントはカフェがいっぱいある町ですが、私のお気に入りはニュージーランド人がオーナーのお店「Te Aro」。オーストラリアを少し思い出すからかな?

We walk over at about 7:30 every morning to relax and read the newspaper over a delicious coffee.
Even though it's so early, it's such a great atmosphere, with people doing early morning meetings, getting a head start on work, or just hanging out over a morning coffee with friends.

毎朝7時30分頃に歩いていって、新聞を読んで、リラックスしながらおいしいコーヒーを飲む。

こんなに早い時間なのに、とても賑やかな雰囲気です。早朝をミーティングをやったり、仕事をしたり、友達と話たりしています。

We're sure to see friends there, so it's a really nice community feel - and of course the coffee and croissants are great!

行けば必ず友達にも会えるし、とても素敵な"馴染みのカフェ"な感じ。
そして素敵だけではなく、コーヒーやクロワッサンもとてもおいしい!

While in Toronto, we always check out the wonderfully nostalgic vintage store Hawke Eyes.

トロントに行く時、「Hawk Eyes」という懐かしい感じのヴィンテージアイテムが集まっているお店を必ずチェック。

Owned by the lovely Rachelle, she hand-picks the most beautiful selection of vintage design finds and home furnishings, furniture and objets from far and wide.

レーチェルという素敵なオーナーが、色々なところからヴィンテージのデザイン小物、インテリアグッズ、家具やオブジェを一点一点ハンドピックして展開しています。

Her colour coordinated displays and quirky aesthetic ensure I find a fantastic treasure every time we pop by.

彼女の面白いカラーコーディネイトのディスプレイと独特のデザインセンスが気に入っているから、行けば必ず素敵な宝物を見つけられるます。本当に楽しい!

We have just spent some time in Toronto, catching up with friends and family, which was lovely.
It was my first proper winter Christmas, so was quite fun to see how the other half of the world celebrates.

年末はトロントで家族と友達と久しぶりに集まれて、とても楽しかった。
初めて本格的な冬のクリスマスなので、寒いところではどういう風に過ごしているのか見るのが楽しみでした。

Each night the menu for our beautiful home-cooked meal was up on the kitchen blackboard. Thanks Jasmine & Leslie...yum!

毎晩の素敵な手作り食事のメニューが黒板に表記。ありがとう、Jasmine & Leslie。。。おいしそう!

Christmas meant lots of amazing food and fun gatherings of friends and family.

クリスマスの時期は家族と友達の集まりが多くて、おいしいもの食べる。

And Christmas day was full of special surprises for us all!

そして、クリスマス当日はみんながスペシャルなギフトをもらって嬉しいことがいっぱい!

I've loved enclosed gardens since I was a child.

子供の頃から中庭が大好き。

My obsession started with the beautiful glass-enclosed garden in my parent's friend's house, It was lush and wild and oh-so exotic smack-bang in the middle of the house, I always swore I'd have one when I grew up and had my own house too.

両親の友達の家にガラスばりの中庭を始めて見た時は感動しました。家の真ん中にあるとは思えないほど、ワイルドに植物が生い茂る庭はとてもエキゾチックだったので、自分が大人になって自分の家を建てる事があれば、中庭を作ろうと心に決めました。

So I was excited to have the chance to visit this year's Serpentine Gallery pavilion 'Hortus Conclusus' in London, an enclosed garden installation by artist Peter Zumthor.

ロンドンにあるSerpentine Galleryの今年のパビリオンは、アーティストPeter Zumthorの「'Hortus Conclusus'」という中庭でした。そこを訪ねるチャンスがあって、すごくうれしかった。

Encased in a forboding black box-like building, from the outside it wasn't at all inviting.

入ったら何があるのか不安になるような真っ黒な建物でした。

Entering one of the cavernous doorways, we found ourselves in a dark, dimly-lit corridor, but just around the corner, voila! the corridor opened out into a warm, friendly garden, with insects buzzing and the blue sky above.

洞窟のような入り口を進むと、暗い廊下が続いていました。でも角を曲がった途端、暗いところから急に明るい中庭が目の前に広がりました。大きな青空と虫の気配が広がり、とても気持ちよかった。

Chairs and tables were dotted around the garden, where people drank coffee while reading, took their lunch break, or simply enjoyed the secluded quietness of the garden.

ガーデンの周りに椅子やテーブルがあり、コーヒーを飲みながら本を読んでいる人やお弁当を食べている人、静かにゆっくりガーデンをエンジョイしている人がいました。

Says the artist, 'Every time I imagine a garden in an architectural setting, it turns into a magical place.' He imagines 'sheltered places of great intimacy where I want to stay for a long time.', which is exactly what this garden was.

アーティスト本人いわく「建築的な立場から庭をイメージすると、本当にマジカルな空間が生まれます」。彼のイメージは「ずっと居たいと思える、心地よく閉ざされた空間」だそう。本当にその通りでした。

What a shame it wasn't a permanent exhibit!

I have been a fan of the American artist James Turrell ever since I visited his installation at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.

金沢21世紀美術館でインスタレーションを見て、アメリカ人アーティストのジェームズ・タレルのファンになりました。

His spaces are mysterious, awe-inspiring and strangely calming, exploring the concept of light, space and perception.

彼が作っているスペースはミステリアスであり、圧倒的な存在感、不思議なくらいとても落ち着けて、光の存在を再発見できます。

I was thrilled at the opportunity to visit his newest installation at the National Gallery of Australia, one of his largest projects to date.

オーストラリア国立美術館で、これまでの彼の最大のプロジェクトを見るチャンスがあり、すごくワクワクしました。

Pictures speak better than words, so I will refrain from writing too much, other than that it was to most beautiful space I've been in for a long time. Located in an open pyramid-like structure, the ochre of the walls, the turquoise blue of the water and the stillness of the air is breathtaking.

言葉より写真の方が分かりやすいと思いますし、素晴らしさは画像で十分伝わるはずです。本当にきれいなスペースですよ。

オープンピラミッドの建造物で中の壁は黄土色、水はターコイズブルー、空気の静寂さの織りなす雰囲気は最高でした。

The juxtipostion of the building's lines, the vivid blue sky and the constantly changing light and shadows were simply stunning. It was a place you could stay in all day, transfixed by the beauty of your surroundings.

建造物のライン、鮮やかな青空と絶えず変化する光と影のコントラストは本当に素晴らしい。美しくて一日中、ずっと居ても飽きない場所です。
